Zoul 2 DanZ - One Year Anniversary!

Zoul 2 DanZ had their First Year Anniversary on August 15th. I was not only performing but the choreographer for the children that perform. There was alot of moves being made up, practices, sweat, stress and run-arounds, but it was all worth it. I haven't performed in awhile so I was excited to get back out there on the floor and show 'em what I got. Also, I never really actually made up a (salsa) dance that others would be performing. So there were alot of emotions running through me that night.

So the day right after the social I was moving back up to New York because my fall semester is approaching. But to spend my last night at home (in Connecticut) surrounded my family, friends, students and non-stop salsa dancing, I couldn't spend it any other way.

I Love 'In The Heights'!

In The Heights began as an original musical conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Picture of him and I on the right). Might I add, that Lin is a genius for being the original creator of the storyline, music and lyrics of the musical. The music is a combination of the genres salsa, merengue, bachata, reggeaton and hip hop. There was one scene where there was tons of salsa dancing; made me yell out "wepa!"

Luckily I got to meet Lin and the rest of the cast of In The Heights and all of them were very, very nice. As you can see Lin is being silly, sticking his tongue out..lol :D

This is the ultimate, best Broadway show I have ever seen in my life! The stage set, plot of the story, music and actors are all amazing! Words can NOT describe the feeling that I was experiencing the day I seen the show.

In The Heights is about the culture and people that live in Washington Heights, New York. The musical is a 3 day-period of showing the life of many characters that have their own personality and problems. As I stated in previous posts, I explained that In The Heights is about chasing your dreams {even if it's getting out of the barrio} and finding out where your real home is.
I would recommend this show to anyone and everyone! I am truly infatuated with this show because hearing the music and watching the actors portray this wonderful story, makes me feel at home and feel like the characters are my neighborhood friends.
"Well you must take the A train
Even farther than Harlem
To norther Manhattan and maintain
Get off at 181st and take the escalator"

Sunset/Salsa Cruise

The Greater Bridgeport Latino Network (GBLN) hosted a Sunset Cruise last night. Here in Bridgeport, CT we have a Port Jefferson Ferry that takes passengers from CT to Rhode Island, NY. Last night, the GBLN stirred up the Ferry by hiring a DJ and shaking up the Ferry a little bit. I had such a wonderful time last night, with the DJ blasting salsa, merengue and old school freestyle music.

Before the ship docked off, GBLN had platinos, arroz, y empanadias (de carne y pollo) for their passengers to enjoy before getting on the ship. Once the Ferry was in sight, everyone began to become excited because the fun was about to begin.

The floor on the ferry was rubber and hard to dance on, but it hardly stopped the party from going. As you can see, last's post, Mr. M.B. even made his way to the ferry and showed his salsa moves. Even some of my sorority sisters were on the Ferry, so it was a good surprise.

Food, drinks, good music, family, friends, and dancing salsa on a boat was such a blast!! The GBLN did a fantastic job on hosting this Sunset Cruise and nothing can beat the feeling of being surrounded by water, the sunset and dancing salsa.

Sí, se puede

Mr. Michael Boyce has been a summer student at Zoul 2 DanZ this year. He first came to the studio explaining that he is involved with his school's salsa club and would like to keep it up while back at home. At his school, they dance on1, but clearly at Zoul 2 DanZ we dance on2, so he was excited to learn how to Salsa on2. He's been dancing salsa for about 10 months and enjoys it everytime he does it.
Facts About M.B!

* 24 years old

*Attends Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA

* Going for his Masters in Computers, this upcoming Fall

* Is a brother of Lambda Upsilon Lambda

So, before I came home from school, I heard about Michael from my boss at the studio and I couldn't wait to meet and dance with him. First time I danced with him, we just fed off of eachother and it's been a blast dancing with/teaching him. But maybe we just 'hit it off' cause we're both 'greek' (Lambda Upsilon Lambda & Beta Sigma Alpha)! Anyhow, he's soo eager to learn and has the passion and drive, like I do. By the way, I think he tries to out shine me when we're not doing partner work..lol....Then again, he says that Alex (the boss of Zoul 2 DanZ) and I always shine..lol...hmm..I have no idea what he's talking about..lol. Sadly, he's going back to school in early August and will not be attending nor performing in Zoul 2 DanZ's next social. But there is always next summer!!
I'm going to leave you with some words from M.B.: "Why dance Salsa? I'm Puerto Rican and that's what we do...."

Piragua, $96,000, Paciencia y Fe..Only in, IN THE HEIGHTS

IN THE HEIGHTS
(*To view video, turn music off at bottom of page)

Tony's 2008 Best Musical is blowing UP in the 'Broadway World!'
The New York Times calls it, "A musical about chasing your dreams and finding your true home, with enough energy to light up the George Washington Bridge. A SINGULAR NEW SENSATION!"
In The Heights began as an original musical conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda during his sophomore year at Wesleyan University. Its Off-Broadway run at 37 Arts, In The Heights quickly became an audience phenomenon and a critical success, capturing people of Latin and non-Latin decent. Over 200 performances, In The Heights planned to move onto Broadway with enhancements of the script and crew. It's move was made on February 14, 2008 and on March 9, 2008, the cast and crew celebrated their Opening Night. The music consists of R&B, Hip Hop, Merengue, Salsa y Bachata. As shown in the video above, you can
see some of the hip hop and salsa moves that are
done in the musical.
So, not only do I love to dance (salsa), but mi encanto singing and acting...yes I am a Broadway Gal!! So when I heard about this musical, awhile back, I figured that it's just a musical that TRIES to portray the life of Latinos. Boy was I wrong!!! When I first saw a clip of this wonderful musical, I was instantly HOOKED! And I am currently obsessed with the show now. Really...I am completly obsessed..lol.
So I did some research on the show, talked to a friend of mine (Primo Danny), and booked tickets to the show. Primo Danny y yo have been counting down the days to go see this wonderful musical. Then, it just so happened that the musical won Best Musical, Original Score (music and/or lyrics), Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations; Not to shabby for being on Broadway for 3 months, huh!? So 16 more days until I go see this Sassy, Latino Musical & you KNOW I'm going to write an entry on it! Ya Ud. Sabe!!
You Don't Need To Be Latin, To Feel It!!!
BY THE WAY....HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Give Me More, Give Me More!

Whoooo!! They're here!! So about a week ago, I ordered new salsa shoes because over the summer I'm going to be dancing alot more, than I usually do during the year. I was convinced by my mother to get 2 new pairs of shoes. They finally came in last night and boy was I excited. The cute salsa shoe boxes caught my eye and then when I opened the boxes, BAM!! There they were. Each pair of shoes came with it's own bag to hold the dance shoes in, when going out; and now the bag says "Got Dance Shoes?" Which I think is SOO cute! :) Maybe I'm just corny. But yes, I went to http://www.exoticsalsashoes.com/ and got my shoes for a GREAT price. They also don't charge for shipping and handeling and come from CA (rather than China, like my last pair of shoes came from).

I am VERY pleased with my new pair of shoes and wondering if I should break one of them in for tonight's practice...hmmmm...we'll see

:)

Decided to get an all black shoes because I had black shoes, but had a different color added to them, etc.
So here's the classic, black Salsa Shoe, displaying a little 'strappy-strappy' action. Also, like every salsa shoe should have, at the bottom of the shoe, it is suede. One side of the show is plain black, while the other side has black mesh.

Size: 7 1/2 (Although I'm usually a size 8)
Heel: 3 inches (duh!)
Price: $49

Gold!!! So I barely wear any gold jewlery because that's just how I am. But I do wear alot of browns and tans, so my mother suggested that I should buy a pair of gold shoes. So I ran across these shoes (located on the right) and liked them in black. Then I saw them in gold and fell in love with them.
Although they dont have the 'strappy-strappy' like I like, they still have the braided straps in the front and mesh on the sides.

Size: 7.5
Heel: 3 inches (Claro, que si)
Price: $49 (Amazing huh?)

CT Surfrider Foundation: Beach Bash

So how was your weekend!?! I went to the beach in Bridgeport, CT because the Connecticut Surfrider Foundation held their first Beach Bash. My father is involved and is a founding father of this amazing non-profit Foundation. This foundation not only holds members that are surfers, but members that do any water sport and/or want to help the beach enviornment, such as cleaning beaches. My father does all of this, including teaching others to surf (as the picture shows below).

So you're probably thinking, what does surfing have to do with salsa?!?!? WELL...my father also was in charge of entertainment at this event. So he happened to "hire" my uncles and friends, to bust out their instruments and play by the beach!
You could imagine the attention the musicains and Surfrider Foundation were giving. There was a crowd at one point and others who wanted to know a little about what the foundation was all about, as well of salsa dancing!!!

Of course I caught some pictures of the band, people dancing, and caught of picture of me and my "boyfriend" getting down to the salsa sounds by the ocean. All in all, the event was a success and I spent my Saturday day, dancing by the waves!

Ray de La Paz

Above is a picture of Ray de la Paz, with my God Sister and myself. He came out to Bridgeport, CT to give a wonderful performance this past Saturday (June 14th). He came out talking to the audience and made the club become one, with his personal conversation to the audience. Every song he sang, people were in the middle of the dance floor dancing and singing along. Surprisingly, every song he sang, I knew! I guess he is one of those singers that you know all of their songs, but not the name.

Ray de la Paz has been in the salsa scene since 1970's, when joining with Chino y su Conjunto Melao and recorded with the band. Ray is a singer, writer and just a plain entertainer. Currently he has a 'mixed tape' out with Johnny Polanco and is working on an upcoming album, as he told my uncle. Ray de la Paz was very nice and didn't shy away from the cameras, when fans asked to take pictures with him.

SO I HAD to show you guys the various instruments that were included in the band that night. The band was originally from Hartford, CT but Ray is from New York, I believe. So from left to right, you see the timbales, then the piano, a bass, the congas, then the trumpets.

MOMA Having Some Sassy-ness

Over the weekend I went to the Museum Of Modern Art located in New York, New York. The Museum was very interesting and inspiring. There was alot of 'thinking' involved when looking at the paintings, sculptures, films, and architectures. I ran across 2 paintings that reminded me of Salsa in some way. The first one shown is by the famous Pablo Picaso, while the second one I forgot to catch the designer's name. Yea..also forgot the year the paintings were made and the title, blah..yea I know...and I'M SORRY I usually don't do things like this..lol. But going to the Museum was a good experience and a calm, relaxing event.

Alright so this painting is the Picaso painting. The first thing that I noticed about this painting was the acoustic guitar that is right smacked in the middle. I thought of the guitar then the paranda (music and festivities associated with Christmas). During paranda, there are LOTS of songs, singing, eating and great memories! The painting reminded me of me and my family having a paranda, all gathered together.

Now the second painting was a painting that went across 4 walls explaining the women and their roles in dance and sexual play. Something like

that, BUT the most important part is that I remember the dance aspiration part of the painting..not the sexual part, lol. So yes, out of the 4 walls this portion of one wall was the most approiate and section that referred to dancing. The top part of the painting reminded me more of ballet at first, but then I thought of slow salsa movements and following the beat of the congas. Referring to the way I think, the bottom of the painting, I see a woman dancing aside a person who is playing some type of instrument.

MOMA had many other paintings that made you think or simply want to take a picture of. All I needed was the cheese, grapes and fine wine. I sugguest if you're into Modern Art or just Art, check out the website (www.moma.org).

My 4-year old Salsero 'Boyfriend' !

*To shut off music so you can hear the video, please go down to the page & click either PaUsE or StOp to shut off the music...

Enjoy The Video! :)

Cutie isn't he?! LOL. Yes, so I do have a 4 year-old boyfriend that goes by the name of Adi (a-dee). He is really my God Nephew if you want to get technical...lol.

Adi has salsa running through his veins and as you can see, he is not shy at all. Once he hears Salsa music, he begins to move his 2 little feet and can't stop. If I'm around, he usually grabs my hands and expects me to dip him, twirl him, and do tricks in the air (since he does weight about 20-35 pounds). He is known for his 'drop it like it's hot' move and even does the Suzzy Q, a shine (fancy footwork). Then after every 'performance' he ends with a dramatic pose, then bows, making the audience adore him.

Now Adi's Grandfather use to be in a local band around the Bridegport,CT area. His Abuelo (Grandfather) plays almost every instrument in a salsa band and did the lead vocals. Nowadays, Abuelo de Adi, just sings where he goes and is a hit during the Holiday Seasons. Adi's Mama is a dancer who occasionally participates in Zoul 2 DanZ's (dance studio in CT) social events. She dances to almost everything and anything. I wonder where she gets it from? lol Adi's father is a local professional baseball player (Go Bluefish!) and dances as well. You can see his father in the video in the background encouraging his son's dancing..lol. Adi takes after both his mama y papa because not only can he salsa, but plays baseball and hits the ball so far, that he amazes you.

So Adi is surrounded by his native culture dance and observes his family's traditions. Not only is my 'boyfriend' cute, but he's a Salsero!

"Creating Unity Through Salsa"

Los Angeles's Salsa Style is effected by Hollywood and the swing & mambo dances, being known as the most flashy style. This style is considered to be more of a show than dance, when compared to the other styles of Salsa (Cuban style, Colombian style, Eddie Torres Style (on1/on2), etc.)

4th Annual Connecticut Salsa Fest

The Hilton Stamford Hotel will NOT know what will hit them, this weekend!

Connecticut once again, is having their Salsa Fest on Friday May 30th till Saturday May 31st! The CT Salsa Fest is being run by Latin Moves Entertainment and Latin Rhythms, including sponsors such as EL SOL NEWS (local spanish newspaper). Salsa is becoming strong and more of an attraction to Connecticut, especially it being so close to New York City. This year, the Salsa Fest includes West Coast Swing and Hustle, with performers from of course Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela and much more.

This fest begins on Friday with performances but Saturday will be the day NOT to miss. Saturday will begin at 10am with on1, on2, partner styles, etc. workshops (till 3pm). There are 16 instructors available for the workshops that bring their own flavor, style, and technique to dancers that want to improve and learn. Afterwards, the rest of the performers will show their 'thang' in their showcases. Around 9:30 p.m. the floor will be open for any social dancing. The CT Salsa Fest Party/Salsa Social will end at 3am, rather than 2am, like the previous years.

Tickets are on sale online and are cheaper to buy online, than at the door. Prices range form $40 to $180, depending if you want a day pass, workshop pass, or combo package.

Zoul 2 DanZ's 3rd Social!!

Caroline Cross has Zoul 2 Danz

So I am currently an instructor at a new Salsa Dance Studio called Zoul 2 DanZ. We dance on 2, hint the "2 DanZ," lol. We're located in Bridgeport, CT and been up since August 2007. So last night was our 3rd Salsa Social and our youngest Salsera, Caroline Cross performed. She did SOO good! She was first introduced to the studio by her aunt that gave her 5 salsa classes as a present. Since then Caroline has been addicted to Salsa & I can't blame her! She definitely has the 'salsa attitude,' the 2-inch heels, and moves to give a pure definition of a 10 year-old Salsera.

Since January, Caroline has been attending classes at Zoul 2 DanZ and last night (May 23rd) was HER night, to show her family, other students, and friends what she got. Most of the performance was Caroline shining (fancy foot work when not dancing with a partner), then the rest were lifts, dips and partner work with her partner, Ricky (who is in the picture above). All of Caroline's family came out to see her and were astonished and amazed, at what this little 10 year-old could shake. She truly has 'Zoul 2 DanZ' and the hips to shake to the maracas.

So I haven't danced since the Wayne Gorbea Event (Post below this one). So this social is what I needed! I just finished my second year of college and was stressed and all, with the finals and moving back to Connecticut. Then I recently started working again, so I needed a night to just relax and let loose. Last night was SOO much fun!! I woke up with back and leg pains, lol...mind you I definitely have to be at work in 3 hours! But yes, this 3rd Salsa Social was alot of fun and I can't wait for the next one!

If you're in the area and would like to know more about the studio, visit the website: www.Zoul2DanZ.com

Wayne Gorbea and Salsa Picante

Me, Wayne Gorbea, Alex & Ricky

Wayne Gorbea - Leader, Piano, Coro (The One in the back circled in red)
Rick Davies - Musical Director,1st Trombone
Ruben Borgas - Timbales, Coro
Frank Reyes - Congas
Juan Rodriguez - Bongos, Coro
Richie Sanquintin - Bass
Ramon Rosado - Coro and Composer/Arranger
Rafi Malkiel - Trombone
Tomer Levy - Trumpet
Wayne Gorbea y Salsa Picante blessed the stage in Club Sixx (Connecticut) on the night of April 19th. Many of the audiences were confused if they knew of Wayne or not, but once the music began, everyone's face glowed with excitement. Wayne Gorbea is from a Puerto Rican background and lived mostly in Manhattan and the Bronx. He began training in his early years and began with the violin and soon switched to the trumpet. Serving in Korea, he learned how to read music and taught himself to play the piano by copying Charlie and Eddie Palmieri and Richie Ray.

Alright, so I had a wonderful time last night! I love
dancing to Salsa, especially LIVE salsa music. Just hearing the live congas, clave, horn and timbales gets me going. Everyone in the club was having a fun time and the atmosphere was vibrant. The one thing that I didn't like about the night was when I was dancing, getting my groove on, and someone accidentally stepped on my foot. BUT I felt the heel go inbetween my foot bone...AHH!! OMG! It hurt sooo bad!!! So I woke up this morning with this pain in my foot and I actually couldn't walk that much. I feel that my foot is bruised internally. So now my foot is displaying that yellow/black and blue 'fashion,' lol. But overall I did enjoy myself and had a great time dancing till the wee-hours of the morning.

¡Ponga sus trajes!

Pleasing to the eye! I love performing because then I get to put on bright, colorful, sexy, light-weight costumes! C'mon, let's face it. When performers are performing (Salseros y Salseras) their costumes are gorgeous {some} and "hot-to-trot" as mi mami says. Costumes are not only fun to wear, but are beautiful to look at.

Although they are full of sequence, glitter, sparkling everywhere, etc. they run a pretty high bill. The picture to the left displays a costume that is about $230.00.

The style of upcoming trajes are the low cut in the back. Leaving the back all open and cutting it low. This seems to represent what is now soultry and sexy and allows the mind to linger and imagine, while seeing the movement of the Salsera. Accessories are also a BIG role in a costume; whether it be a choker, wristeband, or hair clip. These accessories are made especially for the performer to allow him/her to do head whips, hip movements and not worry about accessories flying all over the place. Little things here and there compliment the costume and make the performance that much special!

DSOL

Dance Shoes Online (DSOL) is a great website to order shoes from. I brought a pair shoes from the website a couple of months ago (the black and silver) and fell in love with the comfort and style of the shoe. I got to choose the style, size, and size of the heel. And I LOVE high heels (3 inches or up)!! The bottom of the shoe is suede which makes it easier, for una mujer joven como mí, to do 3, 4, 5 turns. Suede bottoms are actually in style and recommended to dance with because it gives a better grip to any floor type. Although, I do not recommend to dance on the streets with suede bottoms, I would perfer dancing sneakers.
